What is a Class B Motorhome?
Let’s start with some of the basics, and to understand what a Class B motorhome is, we have to break down the name a little bit.
Motorhomes are the only type of non-towable RV, meaning they come with their own drivetrains so you can just hop into the driver’s seat and take off.
However, the motorhome group is so big that the industry had to break it down even further into subcategories, known as classes. Class B motorhomes are built on a van-style chassis and are generally the smallest motorhomes you’ll find. This means you’ll still get all the features you’d expect from an RV, but on a much more streamlined scale.
Benefits
When the market can be overwhelmed by “bigger is better,” why should you go smaller? The truth is that not everyone should get a Class B motorhome. Some campers who can’t make this lifestyle work include families and larger camping parties. There simply won’t be enough room, and that’s okay. You’ll have plenty of other options to choose from.
However, if you’re traveling by yourself or with one other person, they can be ideal.
A smaller model means less maintenance and better fuel efficiency, and you’ll also be able to take advantage of a vehicle that’s easier to maneuver. As the RVs you look at get bigger and bigger, it becomes more necessary to have a smaller primary vehicle for quick trips into town and to get around narrow city streets a little better. But a Class B RV is roughly the size of the other commuter vehicles you’ll be driving next to, so you won’t have as difficult a time trying to squeeze through traffic.
We still highly recommend practicing behind the wheel before hitting the road for your first trip, but it shouldn’t take you long to adjust to any driving differences.
